Panchkarma :-(An Unique Treatment of
Ayurveda emphasizes preventative and healing

Purvakarma: Pre Purification
Measures For Panchakarma
Before the actual operation of purification begins,
there is a need to prepare the body in prescribed
methods to encourage the release of toxins. The
two procedures are snehana and swedana.
Snehana (Abhyangam) is the oil
massage. Oil is applied to the entire body with
a particular type of massage, which helps the
toxins to move towards the gastrointestinal tract.
Oil message also makes the superficial and deep
tissues soft and supple , thus helping to remove
stress and nourish the nervous system . Snehana
is given daily for three to seven days, as indicated.
Swedana is sudation or sweating
and is given every day immediately following the
snehana. A herbal concoction may be added to the
steam to further loosen the toxins from the individual.
Swedana liquefies the toxins and increases the
movement of toxins into the gastro intestinal
Pradhanakarma: Main Purification
Measures Of Panchkarma
Vamana: Vamana is the cleansing
of the stomach and lungs by therapeutic emesis.
Vamana should not be associated with nausea and
sickness as the preparation of herbs taken orally
induces the vomiting and swift in its process
. Vamana is generally recommended to remove excess
kapha which when aggravated results in excess
mucus congestion in the lungs causing repeated
attacks of bronchitis colds, cough and asthma
by clearing this excess kapha.vamana prevents
or reduces the severity of these problems and
Basti: Basti is the cleansing
of the large intestine and the most powerful of
the 5 karmas. It can be compared to an oily hebraized
/ fortified enema where the oil is retained and
absorbed through the intestine and distributed
through the entire body. Basti promote purification
and rejuvenation of the colon and large intestine.
Generally recommended to balance vata the dosha
of movement and thus all physiological activity
of the body. This therefore has effects on all
channels, tissues and other doshas of the body.
Basti differ in concept from colonics as colonics
are great in removing the toxins brought from
the whole body into the large intestine by purvakarma,
but bastis further replenish and nourish all tissues
within the body once these toxins have been removed.
Bastis are most effective in a series of 3-7 treatments.
They relieve constipation, distention, chronic
fever, cols, sexual disorders, kidney stones,
heart pain, backache sciatica and joint pain.
Other vata disorders including arthritis, rheumatism,
gout, muscle spasms and headaches may also be
treatment with bastis. As we said earlier…

Virechan: Virechan is the cleansing
of the small intestines and pitta related organs
(liver & gall bladder) by a herb induced purging
process. Virechan works to remove ama and balance
all metabolic functions, avoiding bile related
problems of rashes, skin inflammation, acne, chronic
attacks of fever, biliary vomiting, and nausea.
Nasya: Nasya is the cleansing
of the nasal and sinus passages. We breathe in
and get our life force (prana) through our nostrils.
They are the doorway to the brain, which controls
our sensory and motor functions. Clearing the
toxins and enabling pure prana improves all mental
activity, memory, concentration and all intellectual

Shirodhara: Popularly known
as third eye treatment of lord Shiva, a therapeutic
Marma head massage with herbal oils is done and
herbal oil, medicated milk, buttermilk or herbal
decoction is poured in gently and steadily over
the forehead in a continuous stream using a special
rhythmic swaying movement. This results in a fantastic
sense of deep relaxation and inner peace.
Abhyangam: This is an Ayurveda
way of oil massage with Marma therapy, Marma are
vital’ points of the body which contain
Prana energy. Gentle pressure on Marma while doing
massage provides Prana energy to the body and
mind, which gives ultimate healing.
Pizhichil or Sarvanqdhara: In
Pizhichil/ Sarvangdhara, pieces of linen, dipped
in comfortably warm medicated oils, are squeezed
on to the body of the person, who lies on a specially
made wooden plank. Pizhichil is an efective remedy
Shirovasthi: This is a procedure
in which a belt is fastened around the head covering
the portion of the forehead so a well like formation
takes place over the head.-this well is then frilled
with oil and kept for some time. This is also
beneficial in diseases of the head especially
in difficulties arising due to injuries to the
Netra Tarpana: This treatment
aims to provide optimum rejuvenation to eyes.
Dough of Urad (black gram) is put around the eye
ball in such a way that a dam like appearance
is seen. Then herbal healing ghee (clarified butter
oil) is put on this groove to lubricate eye and
surrounding areas which will be kept warm for
30-- 35 minutes. This provides improved vision
with beautiful eyes and strengthening of eye tissues.

Khizi: Treatment is a therapy
wherein heated herbs and medicinal oils are tied
in cloth bags; and placed on the area to be treated.
This is followed by specific massages, done using
the fingers, heel of the hand or palm. The pressure

Pinda Svedanam: Pinda swedanam
is a process by which the whole body or any specific
part is made to perspire. This is done by external
application of medicinal boluses, which are tied
in a cloth bag ( p o t a l i ) .
Udvarthanam: The whole body
is gently massaged with medicated powders prepared
with various herbs. This helps to reduce fat patches
from the body known as cellulites, toning of the
muscles, improves blood circulation and eases
joint pains. Regular Udvartanam is good for not
only cellulites but it helps to lose weight by
increasing the basal metabolic rate.
Vashpa swedanam (Medicated steam bath):
This is a unique treatment and under this treatment
leaves of medicinal plants are boiled and resulting
steam is passed to the whole body. This treatment
is helpful in to eliminate impurities from the
body, reducing fat and also helpful in fighting
with some skin diseases. This is also indicated
as PURVAKARMA for Panchkarma procedures.
Beauty Care: Herbal cream is
applied on face and neck through constant massage
movements for 3O minutes. Later, gentle herbal
steam is given and different herbal face pack
dissolved in rose water is gently it herbal face
pack dissolved in rose water is gently applied
on the area. This treatment is very good for the
toning of face muscles, to induce relaxation and
helps getting relief from acne problem.
Urobasthi (Hridyabasti): Warm
medicated oil is kept over the chest for 45 minutes.
This is an effective treatment for Asthma, other
respiratory problems, and muscular chest pain.
Nadi swedanam: Nadi swedanam
is usually done for localized conditions
like osteoarthritis sprain ,or to relieve some
localized pain as in cervical spondylitis .here
fomentation is done with the vapors generated
out of medicated decoction that is then applied
to the affected area with the help of a rubber
tube. Proper oleation of the affected part is
done prior to nadi sweda.
